“9 Teach slaves to be subject to their masters in everything, to try to please them, not to talk back to them, 10 and not to steal from them, but to show that they can be fully trusted, so that in every way they will make the teaching about God our Savior attractive.”

xINTRODUCTION

Paul is continuing his writings to Titus, giving him counsel & wisdom on how to lead the church. In Titus 2, Paul gives Titus speaking, teaching & instruction points for different crowds of people in the church. He addressed how to lead older men, younger men, older women, and slaves in the church. The key in all of this was sound doctrine, leading towards doing good to advance the Gospel.

Heavenly Father, thank You for the opportunity to have godly counsel in our lives. As we walk in relationship with You, help us to be contributors and not just consumers. Help us contribute to the health and wellbeing of the church and the communities it serves. xAMEN
xQUESTIONS FROM TODAY’S READING

  • In Paul’s instructions to Titus, why would he give instructions for the slaves (bondservants – ESV)?

  • How did Paul want Titus to encourage the slaves to live?

  • What would the way the slaves build for themselves by the way they lived??

  • What would the faithfulness of the slaves in the church prove towards others?

  • How did Paul refer to himself & to Christ? How does this impact our position towards Christ?

xAPPLICATION FROM TODAY’S READING

Paul addressed “servants” because they were a large portion of the congregation.

  • Paul uses this same Greek word (doulos) in Philippians 2:7 & Galatians 1:10 to emphasize how Christ took on the form of a servant (His humility) & how Paul was a servant of Christ (dedicated) to God’s approval & serving Him.

For us to understand how Titus 2 impacts our faithfulness, we have to understand we are servants of a greater master, Jesus. 

  • To be a servant (doulous) of Christ is to be fully controlled or submitted to Him.
  • We bear faithfulness by understanding our identity in Christ as His servant. 

As servants of Christ, we are to be submitted to Him in everything. 

Our submissiveness leads to our devotion to Christ, being honest in what we do, & walking in humility. 

  • Walking in this shows our faithfulness (that we can be fully trusted)
  • Our faithfulness is an example of who God is to all those around us. 

Write down 3 ways that being a servant of God impacts your daily life & the way you live every day, proving your faithfulness. 

  • i.e. towards your spouse, friends, in your job, towards your boss, etc.)

xPRAYER TO PRAY FOR YOURSELF & YOUR FAMILY IN THIS SEASON OF LIFE
Lord, I want to represent you well. Help me be faithful, kind and loving to those I come in contact with. Help me to be faithful, kind and loving towards myself. Help me to identify any lie the enemy may have me try to believe and help me cast it out. In moments of weakness, may I run to You. xAMEN
